    I'm a creative director.

Since 1999, my professional track has evolved from graphic designer, to art director, to creative director, mostly in small design, marketing, and advertising agencies or as an independent consultant. I drive the creative talent and manage production, while owning the creative vision and providing Design direction.

In my current role as Design Strategist for a small agency, I consult with brand leaders to help clarify their strategic objectives, identify opportunities to engage customers, and create transformative experiences in both traditional and digital channels. I'm responsible for discovery, scoping, budgeting, planning, and execution. I work with marketers, researchers, usability experts, and other SMEs to understand customer behaviors and maintain a user/customer centered approach to Design. These days, I'm heavy in User Experience and Interaction Design.

Strengths: empathy; intuition; photography; typography; messaging; attacking tricky problems; quickly understanding complex and technical concepts, then explaining them in simple terms; presenting; print design; interaction design, user interface design for web and native mobile apps.

    Guiding Principles

As a student in 1999, I read Richard Wurman’s first publication of Information Anxiety and realized that not just information, but everything with which we interact needs Design. Experiences, processes, software, business relationships, customer lifecycles, products, and the very brands that create them.

    Steeped in the Classics

When I began working as a prepress designer at a commercial litho press in 2000, we were sending image to film. Less than a year later, we were sending direct-to-plate using a digital imagesetter and QuarkXPress was about to give way to Adobe InDesign.

    The Golden Era of Flash

In 2003, I designed and scripted a data-driven, Flash web application that published the daily journals and videos of a climbing team on Mount Everest, delivered by sat-phone from the mountainside.

    Brand "Guru"

Between 2006-2011 I acted as consulting Creative Director for Yoga Today. In that time I designed the brand identity and managed consistency in messages and assets; designed and successfully relaunched the web application three times; deployed digital media subscription and retail eCommerce platforms; produced countless marketing emails, ads, and web components.

    Large Scale Web Applications

In 2008, I was part of the IxD team responsible for the redesign of the American Planning Association web site and web applications for member services.

    Retail eCommerce

In 2009, I worked inside American Eagle Outfitters as part of the UX and IxD team to launch their 77Kids and Martin&Osa retail eCommerce web sites.

Native Apps, Responsive Interfaces, and Methodologies

In addition to the design of sites and applications, I've overseen the planning, concept design, and UI production of several native mobile applications for iPhone, iPad, and Android. I'm comfortable leading the visual design tracks within agile workflows and I'm up to speed on Responsive interface methodologies and frameworks. I believe in order to effectively lead the design of digital products, one must be close enough to the code that they have a realistic perspective on production. I regularly work in HTML5, CSS3, and (a little) javascript for rapid prototyping, adding to the use of tools like AxureRP for Interaction Design.
